Some people think that all "Surreal
photographs must be bizarre but if you look up the
meaning of the word it is given as "
strange; not seeming real; like a dream:"
and synonyms are " unreal, bizarre, unusual, weird, strange, freakish, unearthly, uncanny, dreamlike" so lots of styles could qualify as surreal. . I will try and show this on this page and also state that firstly I am a "Creative Photographer" I do not set out to create surreal images but creative ones.

Most or at least a lot of surreal images are made up of
two or more photos..
As I state in other parts of this site, I wish I could explain on here what I had done to each and every piece but since I do not use the most popular software package it would be hard and who would reveal all of the working for free, you will just have to try and emulate me if you like what I am doing.
On this page I will actually deal with graphic art and hidden work, again trying to show the viewer that something has been done but leaving to the viewer to imagination what
Remember that hovering over the images will display the title of the image and clicking on will display a larger image
Above is what most people associate with surrealism when the image is undeterminable it is but at its extreme.
Please click on the image below for a larger version
Above this is certainly meets the criteria for surrealism as it is at least unreal, unusual, weird, strange, freakish, unearthly, uncanny, others of course could say it is merely a composite image. Yes it is a composite image but the selection of images and how they are used is what makes it surreal.
Above how about this for a surreal portrait, there is quite a few camera images in this image from a couple of expensive ones down to an "iphone" and it is entitled "Beauty through my Lens, any lens"
Move the mouse over the image below for an explanation:
click any of these 2 pics. for larger ones Started out as a simple oil slick in the water but was not very photogenic so a little assistance was given to it. It certainly can now be classed as surreal
Above this is a heavily worked image from two
combined photographs which in turn have been given an oil painting
effect possible can no longer be called a photograph but what can in
this digital age. It depicts the modes of transport of today and
Above looking closely at this or possibly moving farther away from your screen... I enjoyed making this. from the photo of a man running for his bike during an Iron Man competition he did not have a flame in his had this was added later ...... Location Port Elizabeth
Above a composite of several images making up what could be classed in the abstract, surreal category, quite a striking simple composition bordering on minimalism
Above definitely Surreal perhaps too much so for some, the problem being where is the line drawn. This is made from photographs and only a minor adjustment of colour change so it is more real than a lot of my other works just that we are left wondering, what and why?
Here are two studies of a class of water filled with ice
why are they surreal well in one the colours are un-natural and the other the size is also not as is.. One is taken into a mirror of a glass sitting on a highly reflective surface distorting the size of the glass with some colour changing too.. the other is created in a photo editing programme by using several coloured layers of the same photograph only allowing portions of them to be visible.
Is it Surreal or just composite, yes it definitely falls into the surreal category there are multiple images used in this and it leaves you wondering about it so it is at least some of the following "unreal, unusual, weird, strange, freakish, unearthly or uncanny". but I would be happy to have it called creative.
Two portraits shown elsewhere, when you
are looking for something to change the look of a portrait,
layering may be the answer, in the first instance a previous
made composite image is used and made partly transparent so
that the main image shows through.
Also shown elsewhere I think the background and the effects it has given this otherwise straightforward image converts it to suit this category but only just.
You will find many more in the site which fit the category for example the banner in the composite page click for the image
There are composite images and surreal images all over this web site and this one has touch of real surrealism photography, totally unreal, composite made up of composites and manipulated. Look at the background how many faces (thanks to my daughter) can you see?
Above a composite but to me not Surreal as although it serves its purpose to show the use of sections it does nothing for me to make me wonder how it was made and hardly fills any of the other criteria.
remember larger versions can be seen by clicking on the image
Above this should be considered, as I have see less complicated works classed as surreal, anyway I like it.. The use of the large rocking horses at the front dives it depth of field without having to blur anything
A view of a covered parking area
Remember larger versions can be seen by clicking on the image. The spirit of the trees is always watching you
These definitely fit the bill how else would you describe them.
